Third Thursday Thrift Store Scores 10/21/2010

Oh the joy of finding a bargain. There is not greater high than a thrift store score. I've picked up a few this month and I can't wait to share them with you.

I've been wanting a rice cooker. I've even gone so far as to buy one at a big box store and then return it the next day. So imagine my utter delight when I came across this beauty for a cool $5.99 on a Saturday afternoon Goodwill run.

Brand new in the box, but no instruction manual. I went cruising their dot com to see what I can see and the manual was there fully downloadable. I also found out this gem retails for $27.99. I've used it a couple of times and I am in love.

See what else I found? Some yummy pillows for the front porch swing! They even have the tags still on them. From 19.99 each to 3.99 each. Score!

I love the colors and the patterns. I'm thinking about using these colors when we repaint the house this year.

Christmas is fast approaching and I was amped to find photo Christmas cards for .99 each. I'm going to try to do most of my cards electronically, but there are still some people that get the real deal. At least I got them at a thrift store.

Of course this all presupposed I actually get my poop together enough to send out cards this year, electronically or otherwise. Good intentions and all that donchaknow.

That's it for this episode of Third Thursday Thrift Store Finds. You're welcome to play along if you want to share. I'd love to ooh and ahh your finds.

Five Question Friday 10/8/10

We meet again to enjoy another round of Five Question Friday. A very special thanks to Mama M over at My Little Life for hosting this event. Go peek in on her. You'll be glad you did.
1. What do you listen to while driving?
Silence. Blissful silence. There is too much noise everywhere else so when I drive I want it quiet. The exception would be when Dave Ramsey's show comes on from 1-4 in our neck of the woods. Although I don't like Fridays when people call in to yell about being debt free. I don't like Fly Lady testimonials either.

2. What is your least favorite thing about Fall?
That's a hard one. I really, really, REALLY like fall. I guess I'll have to say the ragweed pollen. It makes my allergies act up, but other than that there isn't much that bothers me about fall.

3. What does your dream house look like, inside and out?
Clean with things in their place. I don't ask for much I just would like it in order. I would love a bigger craft room and an indoor laundry room I could also dig a swimming pool. The Mister refuses to get a pool now because he says he'd have to do the maintenance. Yeah, uh huh. That's how it would play out.

4. Would you ever own a minivan?
I have owned one and I loved it. She met an untimely death last year when The Mister was hit by a car that lost it's tire and t-boned "Vanny". I always said I would drive her until she died and I did.
Now we have an SUV that The Mister will drive when I get my next vehicle. I'm still thinking a minivan, but possibly a crossover. I thought for a very brief minute that I would look into a Toyota Camry, but then I picked up for car pool and that ended that thought.

5. Do you wash new clothes before wearing them?
Yes. I didn't used to, but I saw an episode on TV where people were getting sick and the only connection was a certain kind of jean. The sick people hadn't washed their clothes first and some poison on the docks seeped into the clothes making patients sick. I know it's TV, but now I wash all my clothes before I wear them. I'm weird. Don't judge.

Well, there we have it for this time around. Do head on over to let Mama M. know you played. Always a pleasure!

Five Question Friday 10/1/2010

It's time for this week's Five Question Friday hosted by Mama M over at My Little Life Go on over and read all the really cool answers. I love this weekly glimpse into other lives.

1. Did you have a pen pal when you were little (or now)? Where were/are they from?

I did. I met her in elementary school and then she moved to Brussels, Belgium. When you're 10 years old you and live half a world away friendship becomes about letters and being pen pals.
We lost touch for 25 years and recently reconnected over Facebook. You have love social media sometimes.

2. If you could do a different job for one day, what would it be?
I'd want to work at a newspaper on a big news day. When I worked in media is was television news for the most part. When a story was being pulled together is was crazy, but it was for such a short time (like 1 minute air time). I'd be interested to find out how the process differs in print media.
3. Do you remember your biggest fear from when you were little?

Yes. Being kidnapped. Now it's my biggest fear for my own kids. I try not to get all crazy about it since I don't want to them to become afraid, but yeah, scares me witless.

4. What do you think is a waste of time? Why?

Meetings. Specifically team building and status update meeting.

I hate them. I try to get out of as many as possible. I hated meetings when I worked outside the home. Now I hate them as a part of volunteering. Most of this stuff can be done via group e-mails or even Skype. Meeting just meet is a waste of time. I love to volunteer and to give back to my community, church, neighborhood and school, but since I work in a virtual world now it's hard for me to deal with IRL meetings.

5. What is the oldest item you have in your closet?

Me when I'm standing in it...*snicker*.

Seriously it's my college sweatshirt. I got it when I started undergrad in 1989 and I still wear it. I know the fashionistas out there are cringing, but you've got to respect the 21 year old history it holds.

Another great round of 5 Question Friday. Join me next week won't you?
